https://www.perplexity.ai/search/metallica-one-meanining-4tGJwNfsTee8PaEP1bKw1AMetallica's "One" is about a World War I soldier who is severely wounded by a landmine—losing his limbs, sight, hearing, and ability to speak—and is left trapped in his own body, unable to communicate except by begging for death in his thoughts. The song's meaning centers on the devastating personal cost of war, portraying the horror of total physical and sensory isolation while being conscious, and serves as a powerful anti-war statement inspired by the novel "Johnny Got His Gun".[1][2][3][6] ## Lyrics & Story - The protagonist is a soldier who survives an explosion but loses all limbs and senses, leaving only his mind intact.[2][1] - The storyline is based on Dalton Trumbo's novel *Johnny Got His Gun*, following the character Joe Bonham who is similarly trapped and desperate for release.[6][1] - The song is one of Metallica's most acclaimed for its emotional depth and anti-war stance.[3][4] ## Themes - **War's brutality:** "One" focuses not on the battlefield, but the traumatic aftermath and the suffering of soldiers who survive in horrific states.[4][3] - **Isolation and despair:** The lyricist explores existential despair, with the protagonist begging to die to escape his living nightmare.[2][4] - **Anti-war message:** The song strongly condemns war by showing its human cost at the most personal level.[3][4] ## Cultural Impact - Widely regarded as one of the greatest anti-war songs in metal, "One" helped establish Metallica's seriousness in their genre and is a staple in their live performances.[2][3] - Its music video features scenes from the film adaptation of *Johnny Got His Gun*, reinforcing its powerful message visually.[5][2] In short: *"One"* is about the horror of being alive but utterly trapped and helpless after war injuries, delivering a direct anti-war statement.[1][4][6][3][2] [1](

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S06nIz4scvIMy high school football coach was a door gunner in Vietnam. He told us a story of how he shot a North Vietnamese soldier that was so close to him that the guy came out of his shoes. He told us a lot of stories, but he never glorified it. He wasn’t proud of what he did and I don’t think at 19 years old, when he enlisted, that really understood what he was getting himself into. He definitely had PTSD and struggled with it. One of my friends told me she saw him crying in his truck one day. He was a great coach and teacher and had a huge impact on my life....Love you, Coach Murray, where ever you may be.
